Why I Love DoTERRA

Why I Love doTERRA Essential Oils

Essential oils have become such a part of my everyday life that it's hard to imagine my home without them. If you've ever wondered what the fuss is about—or why I reach for doTERRA specifically—pull up a chair. Here's my honest take.

What essential oils actually are

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that capture the natural aroma, or "essence," of their source—the flower, leaf, bark, peel, or resin. They're made of natural aromatic compounds, and each oil has its own personality because of them: the linalool that gives lavender its soft, floral scent, the menthol behind peppermint's cool freshness, the bright limonene that makes citrus oils smell so sunny. That's a big part of why different oils feel so different when you use them.

People have enjoyed aromatic plants for thousands of years. Today most of us use essential oils in three simple ways: aromatically (in a diffuser or just off the bottle), topically (always diluted in a carrier oil), and around the home (in DIY cleaners and self-care).

A few of my favorites, and how I actually use them

Lavender — my desert-island oil. A soft, calming floral scent I love to diffuse in the evening to make the whole house feel peaceful before bed. It's also lovely in DIY skincare.

Peppermint — bright, cool, and invigorating. Wonderful in a diffuser when I want an energizing lift, or diluted for a refreshing feel on a warm day.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) — a longtime staple in my DIY skincare and cleaning routines. Always well diluted.

Eucalyptus — that fresh, wide-open, spa-like aroma. I love a few drops in a steamy shower or the diffuser.

Lemon — clean, sunny, and uplifting. My favorite for brightening a room and for homemade cleaning sprays.

Frankincense — warm, resinous, and grounding. A beautiful scent for quiet moments, prayer, and meditation, and popular in skincare.

Rosemary — herbaceous and energizing; a great scent for my workspace.

Roman Chamomile — gentle and softly sweet, a soothing aroma for winding down.

Oregano — potent and spicy (a little goes a long way—dilute well).

Geranium — sweet and floral, a favorite in skincare and homemade perfume blends.

The AromaTouch Technique Kit (a favorite way to share oils)

If you ever want to experience essential oils rather than just smell them, the AromaTouch Technique is a beautiful place to start. It's a simple, hands-on method doTERRA developed (created by Dr. David Hill) for applying a sequence of oils along the back — think of it as a calming, pampering ritual you can share with someone you love. Every oil is applied diluted in fractionated coconut oil, which comes right in the kit, so it's gentle and wonderfully beginner-friendly.

Here are the oils and blends that make up the kit — I've put them in bold so they're easy to spot:

doTERRA Balance — a grounding blend with a warm, woody aroma (spruce, ho wood, blue tansy, blue chamomile, and frankincense) that I find beautifully centering.

Lavender — soft, floral, and calming; it sets the tone for the whole experience.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) — fresh and clean, a longtime skincare favorite.

DoTERRA On Guard — a warm, spicy-sweet blend of wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. I love its cozy autumn aroma, and it's lovely in DIY cleaning.

AromaTouch — doTERRA's massage blend, created for relaxing, comforting application.

Deep Blue — cool and minty, a favorite to work into a relaxing massage.

Wild Orange — bright, sweet citrus that instantly lifts the mood of a room.

Peppermint — crisp, cool, and invigorating; the perfect finishing note.

And a special mention for Frankincense, one of my personal must-haves. Its warm, resinous, grounding aroma is beautiful on its own for quiet moments and meditation — and it's also tucked right inside the Balance blend in this kit, so you get to enjoy it two ways.

Using them safely (please don't skip this)

Essential oils are powerful, and "natural" doesn't automatically mean "harmless." A few ground rules I live by:
  1. Dilute before applying to skin—always pair with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut or jojoba.
  2. Internal use please read the labels. Some oils are not meant to be ingested.
  3. Citrus oils (lemon, bergamot, and others) can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so be mindful after applying.
  4. Pregnancy, nursing, children, and pets: some oils aren't appropriate—please check with a knowledgeable healthcare provider first.
Do a small patch test with any new oil, and keep them out of reach of little ones.
Why doTERRA, specifically

There are a lot of oil companies out there. Here's what keeps me with this one:

Quality testing. doTERRA uses a company standard it calls CPTG (Certified Pure Tested Grade). It's worth being clear-eyed here: CPTG is doTERRA's own trademark, not an independent certification like USDA Organic. That said, it involves third-party GC/MS testing, microbial and heavy-metal screening, and batch tracking, and you can look up results by batch code.

Sourcing. Their Co-Impact Sourcing model sources oils from the plants' native environments and emphasizes fair partnerships with small-scale farmers and sustainable practices.

Transparency. Batch-level testing you can actually check gives me peace of mind.

A full range. Single oils, blends, personal care, and household products all in one place.

Education and community. There's a genuinely helpful ecosystem of classes, an app, and a big user community for learning safe, sensible use.

Giving back. The doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation supports clean-water projects, disaster relief, anti-trafficking work, and community development.

Years ago, I worked at a wellness center that carried seven different lines of essential oils. I'll be honest — none of them were big sellers. They just didn't make much of an impression, and people rarely came back for more. Then my boss discovered doTERRA. Once she experienced the difference in quality for herself, she cleared every other brand off the shelves and replaced them all — in her mind, nothing else even belonged in the same category. And this time, people noticed. They fell in love with the oils, found more and more ways to weave them into everyday life, and kept coming back for them. That was the moment doTERRA won me over, too.

An honest word (because I'd want a friend to tell me)

I try to always keep my eyes open, even about brands I love. So in fairness:

doTERRA oils are not cheap—they're a premium product at a premium price.

The company uses a multi-level marketing model, which means income comes largely through a network of independent distributors. Those who introduced doTERRA to me were an incredible support as they provided opportunities for learning from a variety of expert sources and shared from a place of genuine belief in the product and the results. Essential oils really are more effective, more affordable and safer alternatives.

CPTG isn't recognized by outside certifying bodies like USDA Organic or ISO—it's an internal standard.

Where to find them

If you'd like to explore, you can browse my doTERRA storefront here: https://mydoterra.com/celiacshack

A quick celiac note, since so many of us here live gluten-free: pure essential oils are simply plant oils, which makes the oils themselves naturally gluten-free. (As always, if you're looking at a supplement or a blended product rather than a single oil, check the label.)

If you have questions or want help getting started, email me at celiacshack@gmail.com —I'd love to help you find where to begin.

With much love,

Steffanie
