Your Digestive System: Keeping Things Moving
Most of us don't give our gut much thought until something feels off — but it's quietly doing some of the busiest work in the body all day long. When digestion is running smoothly, a lot of us just feel better for it: lighter, more comfortable, more energized.
When things slow down? A lot of us notice it — and not just in our stomachs.
When digestion feels sluggish
When everything's moving along at a comfortable pace, you tend to feel your best. But modern life doesn't always make that easy. Between processed food, not enough fiber or water, long stretches of sitting, and plenty of stress, a lot of people end up feeling bloated, backed up, or just generally sluggish.
The encouraging part: the same simple habits that keep digestion comfortable are the ones that help you feel good overall.
What can leave you feeling sluggish or irregular
It usually isn't one thing — it tends to build up over time. Common culprits include:
Diets high in processed foods and low in fiber
Not drinking enough water (hydration is your digestion's best friend)
Ignoring the urge to go when it hits
Not moving your body enough
Certain medications that can slow things down (worth a conversation with your pharmacist or doctor)
Stress and busy seasons of life

Gentle, everyday ways to support healthy digestion
Here's the spectrum I lean on, from the gentle everyday stuff to things you'd only do occasionally and with the right support.
1. Fiber and whole foods (my everyday foundation)
Leaning into fiber-rich whole foods — vegetables, fruit, gluten-free grains, seeds — plus soluble fiber like psyllium husk, chia, and flax, is my go-to for feeling comfortable and regular. It's gentle enough for daily life and supports a happy gut over the long haul. It works gradually rather than overnight, which is exactly what makes it sustainable.
2. Hydration
Water does so much of the quiet work here. If you're upping your fiber, upping your water right alongside it makes all the difference in how you feel.
3. Fermented foods
Sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt (if it works for you), kefir, and other fermented foods are a lovely, food-first way to support a healthy gut as part of your regular routine.
4. Movement
Even a daily walk helps keep things moving. You don't need a gym — you just need to not sit still all day, every day.
5. Soothing herbal teas
Gentle herbs like ginger, fennel, and peppermint make for a comforting cup and are a nice ritual when you're feeling a little off. Some traditional herbs are stronger and stimulant-based (senna and cascara, for example) — those aren't for daily use, and I'd only reach for them occasionally and with guidance from someone who knows your health history.
A note on the more intensive approaches
You'll see a lot online about salt-water flushes, magnesium/oxygen cleanses, enemas, professional colonics, and multi-day liquid programs. Some people include these in their routines, but they're a very different category from the gentle daily habits above — they can affect hydration and electrolytes, they're not right for everyone (especially anyone with blood pressure, kidney, heart, or other health conditions), and the more involved ones really should be done with a qualified practitioner. If you're curious about any of them, please talk it through with your healthcare provider first so it's a good fit for your body. This is general wellness information, not personal medical advice.
What I personally use (and why it's changed)
I'll be honest with you, because that's the whole point of this little corner of the internet.
For a long time, when someone asked me where to start, I pointed them straight to the doTERRA cleanse. I still have deep respect for doTERRA — I worked at a busy Wellness Center where my boss had supported over 10,000+ people on their wellness journeys, and I learned so much there. Through her doTERRA business, and through the cleanse (90-Day Reset) that she developed (that doTERRA now uses), she has helped 100,000+ individuals. There are incredible stories from simple to super complex. But as a celiac, I kept running into the same wall: many of the supplement products aren't reliably, verifiably gluten-free. Some contain wheat in the fine print. Product pages don't always stay current. And when gluten makes you truly sick, "probably fine" isn't good enough.
So I did what I always do — I researched. And I found a company whose approach fits my gluten-free life better for the foundational pieces: Zinzino.
Here's how I think about it now: I use each company for what it does best.
doTERRA — for the oils I know and trust
Pure essential oils are simply oils, which makes them naturally gluten-free, and they're still very much part of my routine. These days I stick to the oil-based products: the pure essential oils themselves, plus a few favorites like the turmeric capsules, frankincense capsules, and DDR Prime. (Even with these, I'd double-check the current label if you're celiac — but the oil-based products are where I feel most confident.)

Zinzino — for a gluten-free foundation
What drew me in was that Zinzino takes a genuinely different approach, built on something I rarely see: testing instead of guessing. When you start with the omega, a simple at-home test comes with it — a few drops of dried blood you mail to an independent lab — so a few months in you can actually see what changed in your own numbers instead of taking it on faith.
Here's what I build my routine on:
A different kind of omega. Their BalanceOil+ pairs omega-3s (from wild-caught small fish) with polyphenol-rich Spanish olive oil and vitamin D3 — the olive polyphenols help keep those fragile omega-3s stable. One honest celiac note on the fiber: ZinoBiotic+ is built on oat beta-glucans. Zinzino states they're free from gluten and grain cross-contamination and tested under 20 ppm — but a small number of us with celiac also react to the protein in even certified-pure oats. If that's you, this may not be your product, and that's okay.
