Super Hero Powers with Green Drinks!
Super Hero Green Juice
My two best juicing helpers, and the green mustaches that made me grab the camera.
I have two very good helpers whenever I get out the juicer. The deal is simple. If the kids help me, I juice the kale, celery, and dandelion greens first, and then we add a couple of apples at the end. That little bit of apple is the secret weapon. ALL of my kids finish the whole drink, green foam and all!
I looked up and there they were, my little super heroes, grinning at me with green foam on their top lips. I could not resist grabbing the camera. It made me laugh that my daughter was wearing her brother's Spider-Man costume. They really are the best super hero helpers, juicing fruits, veggies, and greens right alongside me.
Kids drink what they help make. Every single time.
The recipe
Super Hero Green Juice

Super Hero Green Juice
Makes 1–2 glasses
A few leaves of kale
A stalk or two of celery
A handful of dandelion greens
2 apples (the secret weapon)
Juice the greens first, then run the apples through last. The apple sweetens the whole thing and softens the green, which is exactly why the kids drink every last sip. Pour it up, and don't wipe off the green foam. Around here, the mustache is the best part.

More super hero flavors
Not every hero wears the same color, right? Here are a few we rotate through, depending on who is helping and what we have on hand.
The Sidekick (for the littlest heroes)

The Sidekick (for the littlest heroes)
Makes 1 glass
1 or 2 leaves of kale
3 apples
Mostly apple, just a whisper of green. This is how I start the little ones. Once they love it, I add a little more green each time.
Orange Power

Orange Power
Makes 1–2 glasses
3 or 4 carrots
2 apples
A little fresh ginger (optional)
Bright orange and naturally sweet. This one is my son's favorite. He would happily skip the apples and just do carrots and greens, but the apple makes it a crowd-pleaser for everyone else.
Red Hero

Red Hero
Makes 1–2 glasses
2 apples
A small piece of beet
A handful of berries
A gorgeous ruby-red juice. Start with just a little beet, since it is strong, and let the apple and berries do the sweetening. (Fun warning: beets can turn things a little pink later on. Totally normal, and the kids think it is hilarious.)
Whatever color your hero picks, the trick is the same. Start it sweeter, let them help, and add a little more green or veggie over time.

Little helpers make it happen
Here is what I have learned over and over. Kids drink what they help make. When my two get to feed the greens and apples through the juicer, they are proud of it, and they WANT to drink it. So I let them help. Yes, it's messier. Yes, it's slower. It is worth every bit.
Give your kids a job at the counter, let them push the apples through, and hand them the glass they helped make. Then step back and watch them finish it. Green foam and all.
Raising little super heroes who cheer for their greens? That is a good day in my book.
Lots of love,
Steffanie
