The Cancer PREVENTION Coalition

In my quest for recovering my health (documented throughout this blog), I realize that I repeatedly say over and over again (in so many different ways) the cause and effect that our food choices have on our health.

On thing I have learned throughout the years of intense study as I've tried to overcome my health issues is to NEVER TRUST an organization that makes a profit off of an individual, community or society being sick.  Never trust the advise they give for you to be 'well'.  If the company can't make money off of the suggestion (to be well), then they most likely won't recommend it to you and the company (without morals) would fight to keep you from knowing the cheap effective (and natural) way of treating the particular illness.

Devil Child...Really?

This afternoon my kids finished all of their chores, their homework etc. and so off they went to play.  The kids were not outside very long until one of the kids told me that a neighbor had thrown a rock at another kids head.  Come to find out, this neighbor (a girl), had thrown a rock at my son's head while he was riding a knee board down the road. My son had ducked and so the rock missed hitting him. Dangerous! Wow, the Mama Bear instinct came roaring out of me when the kids told me this. I could seriously feel the blood boiling inside. This girl is almost a teenager and she was throwing a rock at a child? I had to calm down and I had to think clearly before talking. How was I going to deal with this?  I already had an irritation with Gertrude (name has been changed).  One day I had heard this same girl swearing at a group of kids.  At the time the words were said, the girl didn't know I was on the porch listening to her.  Without delay I had walked to where she could see me and I said "I can't believe such a cute girl would say such a thing".  Embarrassed, she ran home without saying anything to me.

URGH!!!  All I can say to you right now is I WISH THIS GIRL COULD HAVE A GREEN, VERY GREEN, SMOOTHIE, EVERY....SINGLE...DAY....EVERY SINGLE MEAL...FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO GET THE MEAN STREAK....OUT....OF.....HER!!!

I say this because of an experience a friend of mine had with her daughter...

The dear friend of mine had a little girl who she described as being "The Devil Child".  This little girls siblings (who were all older than her) were afraid of her.  The girl would say extremely rude things to anyone who passed by her calling them fat, ugly, stupid, etc.  The girl would hit, fight, bite, scream and seriously act like she was possessed.  What did my friend (the Mother) due to help her little girl...

She gave her little girl GREEN SMOOTHIES 3 x's a day and sometimes more!

After several months on these smoothies, my friends daughter began to experience other emotions other than hate and anger.  I didn't know this little one when she was the quote "Devil Child", but I laugh and laugh at the stories that my friend and her oldest daughter tell of what "use to be" and how they were so afraid of her.  If you are a Mother who thinks she has a "Devil Child" my thoughts and prayers go out to you.  I cannot even imagine what you must be going through at times.  My poor kids have a "Devil Mother" when I eat gluten.  I too need green smoothies!

Food DOES make a difference.

The first Gertrude mentioned above is quite thin and not very healthy looking.  I can't help but think she could have an intolerance to gluten.  I yelled at my oldest son one time and he asked me "Mom, have you had gluten?"  "No" I yelled back, "It's just that I've asked you 20 times already". Gluten DOES affect the mind!  My kids know that their Mom on gluten is different from the Mom off of gluten.

So, dear reader, if  you are starting to think the Devil resides in your little one, yourself, or your spouse...think "GREEN", and think "CLEAN".  Get that little one (or yourself) as much GREEN veggies, green super foods and beneficial herbs and essential oils as you can into the body / mind.  (Essential Oils can chelate toxins from the brain since pure essential oils can pass the blood/ brain barrier). Clean up the diet, and clean out the toxins.

Some great essential oils to use for Anger (In my Opinion) would be Frankincense (God in a Bottle) and Myrrh (Blood Purifier).  Other essential oil users recommend Chamomile Oil, Melissa Oil, Rose Oil, or Ylang-Ylang Oil for treating Anger.

Many natural physicians say that you have bursts of anger, you most likely have an unhealthy liver - full of fatty deposits or toxins.  Cleanse the liver and you hep to cleanse the emotions.  Here is a list of Herbs that you can use to combat hate and anger...

Aloe Very Juice can easily be added to a drink.  The dandelion leaves I add to my green drink in the mornings, yellow dock makes a great tea that you could drink daily.  I suggest drinking the yellow dock tea (great at chelating heavy metals from your body) with red raspberry tea as well since it is such a healing and supportive herb for mother and child alike.

Keep sugar FAR AWAY from anyone you suspect has horns :)  The 2nd Gertrude mentioned in this post has a Mom that now does NOT buy processed food and the green smoothies will be a regular part of Gertrude's diet for many, many years to come.  Gertrude number one... may I suggest a diet that is Naturally Gluten-Free, green drinks morning, noon and night, yellow dock / red raspberry or chamomile tea, some Frankincense and...a colon cleanse!

"Sugar" Spoken

Today, while attending Relief Society* we were talking about the Law of Health discussed in the scriptures.  To start the discussion, the teacher assigned to teach the lesson asked a question "what is one of the worst things you can give your children".  Without much delay my mind thought about one of the most damaging things I could think of and I raised my hand to answer the question.

My answer "Sugar".

The teacher jokingly said "Oh great.  Now my entire lesson has been ruined".  We all laughed.  She continued to joke about sugar and her addiction to it, but my mind drifted to past experiences and knowledge tucked away from so many years of study and prayer.  I laughed at the sarcasm and the jokes, but I kept my seriousness to myself.  I really did view sugar as one of the worst things we could feed our children.  Sugar in its many forms. 

Before the class had begun, a woman (a good friend of mine who has read my blog) read the topic of the lesson and then tapped me on the shoulder and whispered to me "this is going to be a great lesson for you to contribute to".  I nodded and laughed in agreement.  So true.  I've been studying health for the past 12 years with intensity and attention to detail - especially as it relates to the Law of Health talked about in the Scriptures.

Many comments were shared and great advise was given and I really wanted to share so much with the women in attendance, but when all was said and done, the only word I uttered was simply "Sugar".  The first comment given and it was the last comment I offered.

"Most of us have heard the good advice that we need to eat less sugar - and rightly so. However, despite the numerous warnings by health authorities of the ill effects of sugar, the majority of the population is still consuming sugar on a daily basis in some form or other. We do not have to consume white, refined sugar to be consuming sugar. Sugar includes glucose, fructose (as in fruit sugar), lactose (as in milk), sucrose (as in table sugar), maltose or malts (as in rice malt and honey), jam (contains concentrated juice, which is high in fruit sugar), maple syrup, corn syrup, palm sugar (traditionally used in macrobiotic cooking), and the very deceiving organic brown sugar, which is not all that different from white sugar. The sugar industry is not in decline and obesity is on the increase. Sugar is a major culprit in the case against obesity. For obese individuals, consuming even a teaspoon of sugar a day would cause metabolic imbalances that contribute to obesity. Sugar is to be avoided, not only by the obese but by healthy individuals.

Is there rationale behind the statement, 'Sugar is to be avoided'? Definitely!

Nancy Appleton, PhD, clinical nutritionist, has compiled a list of 146 reasons on 'how sugar is ruining your health' in her book Lick the Sugar Habit. Here are some of them:

* Sugar can decrease growth hormone (the key to staying youthful and lean)

* Sugar feeds cancer

* Sugar increases cholesterol

* Sugar can weaken eyesight

* Sugar can cause drowsiness and decreased activity in children

* Sugar can interfere with the absorption of protein

* Sugar causes food allergies

* Sugar contributes to diabetes

* Sugar can contribute to eczema in children

* Sugar can cause cardiovascular disease

* Sugar can impair the structure of DNA

* Sugar can cause hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children

* Sugar contributes to the reduction in defense against bacterial infection (infectious diseases)

* Sugar greatly assists the uncontrolled growth of Candida Albicans (yeast infections)

* Sugar contributes to osteoporosis

The body changes sugar into 2 to 5 times more fat in the bloodstream than it does starch. With 146 proven reasons why sugar is bad for us, is there perhaps one single reason as to why we might need it? The only interesting thing about sugar is that it tastes good and makes us temporarily feel good. This is an area worth exploring.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a 5000 year-old wisdom of self-contained knowledge of healing, we all need sweetness in our life. We need six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, astringent, bitter and pungent to stimulate the taste buds on our tongue at main meals, in order to experience satiety.

Satiety and cravings are the result of imbalances in brain chemistry and have nothing to do with fullness of the stomach. When foods hit our tongue, our taste buds relay the bio-chemical information to the brain, stimulating various parts of the hypothalamus – the 'satiety centre'. The tongue is also a mini representation of the body, just like in reflexology, and contains points that stimulate all the organs in the body. Avoiding sweetness would be unnatural and unnecessary, as this will inevitably lead to imbalances and sweet cravings. This is why people have such a hard time giving up sugar; it is almost impossible to get children to stay away from it.

Many people really try hard to avoid sugar, and do not sweeten their tea or coffee, yet they crave sugar in some other form, such as chocolates, cakes, ice cream or even fruit - dates and figs. Dates are 99% sugar, in the form of fructose. When a person is in metabolic balance they do not crave sugar. If they do, it is a sign of a metabolic imbalance and it can be corrected without having to consume sugar.

The wonderful thing is that we do not have to give up the sweetness of sugar in order to be healthy; we just need to replace it with better alternatives. While giving up sugar is very difficult, replacing it is now very easy. There are two natural, organic sugar alternatives that are sweet, easy to use and cook with – stevia and xylitol. They may sound like chemicals but they are completely natural and have been proven not only safe but beneficial for our well-being.

The best one to use is Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) from the Asteraceae family, which was rediscovered by Dr. M. S. Bertoni in 1888. Stevia is a herb that has been used as a sweetener in South America for hundreds of years. It is calorie-free, which means it has no effect on our bodies' production of insulin. Stevia, in its powdered concentrate, is 300 times sweeter than sugar, so only tiny amounts are needed for sweetening. Stevia is widely used all over the world. In Japan, for example, it claims 41% of the sweetener market, including sugar, and was used in Japanese Diet Coke until the company replaced it with aspartame (to "standardize" worldwide).

There have not been any reports of toxicity with stevia, which is consumed by millions of people daily. However, in the US, the FDA, and in Australia, the FSANZ, do not allow stevia to be used as a food additive. But in China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, stevia is fully approved and has proven to be safe, with no toxicity reported from its use to date. In Australia stevia is sold as a supplement and it is readily available from various distributors. The only thing that deters people using stevia is that it can taste a little bitter in drinks and in some recipes, but this can be overcome by using another wonderful sweetener, called xylitol, in combination with stevia for ideal sugar replacement.

Xylitol is a natural substance found in fibrous vegetables and fruit, as well as in corn cobs and various hardwood trees, like birch. It is a natural, intermediate product that regularly occurs in the glucose metabolism of humans and animals, as well as in the metabolism of several plants.

Xylitol is so natural that our bodies produce up to 15 grams of it daily during normal metabolism. Xylitol has been known to organic chemistry since the 1890's. Studies on both humans and rodents have shown that xylitol, when administered orally, is well tolerated and safe to levels of at least 40g per day (which equates to some 10-12 teaspoons of sugar) with no subjective or objective adverse findings. Importantly, much less insulin is released into the blood during xylitol administration than during glucose administration. This is obviously a very good thing for insulin-sensitive individuals or for anyone concerned with weight loss, as insulin (apart from driving the glucose into the cells) also tells the body to store even slight excess carbohydrates as fat, rather than to use them as energy.

Relatively high quantities of xylitol are found in plums, raspberries and cauliflower (0.3 to 0.9 g per 100 g dry matter; the quantities vary depending on plant varieties). Even though xylitol is derived from fruits and vegetables, it is not the same as fructose. Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar, which means that it is anti-microbial (prevents the growth of bacteria), whereas all other forms of sugar are six-carbon sugars, which cause bacterial and fungi overgrowth.

Xylitol looks, feels and tastes exactly like sugar - though that is where the similarity ends! While sugar wreaks havoc on the body, xylitol heals and repairs. It also builds immunity.

There are many benefits of using xylitol as a sugar substitute:

* Glycemic index of 7 (sucrose is 60)

* Minimal effect on blood sugar and insulin levels

* Inhibits yeast, including Candida Albicans (It actually helps fight candida)

* Inhibits plaque and dental cavities by 80% (Dentists use it and recommend xylitol toothpaste)

* Retards demineralization, and promotes re-mineralization, of tooth enamel

Based on scientific and public health evaluations, xylitol has been approved in virtually all industrialized countries to be used in oral hygiene products and in other products to promote oral health.

In its crystalline form, it can replace sugar in cooking, baking, and as a sweetener for beverages. Xylitol is used in chewing gum, mints and hygiene products, such as nasal and mouth washes, because it inhibits bacteria. Unlike many artificial sweeteners, it leaves no unpleasant aftertaste.
Xylitol is formally approved in over 50 countries worldwide. Xylitol has no known toxic levels (Except that quantities over 90 gm/day may have a laxative effect).

The amount tolerated varies with individual susceptibility and body weight. Most adults can tolerate at least 40 gm/day. The only problem with xylitol is that it costs more than sugar, however, if we combine it with stevia in the ratio of 12:1 (12 parts of xylitol to 1 part of stevia), it becomes more cost effective and is a healthy way to sweeten our taste buds and satisfy our brain! Imagine eating cakes and chocolates that not only taste good but are also good for our teeth? You can literally have your cake and enjoy it without the guilt or empty detrimental sugar calories!

Taking The Fear Out of....Everything!

I'm just about to head out the door to take the kids to the library.  About 5 minutes ago I jumped on Facebook to respond to a message I'd received earlier.  When I looked at the recent posts, one of my dear friends had posted something about wishing there was more fluoride in Utah's water.  She was off to the dentist, hadn't had a cavity in 31 years but thought her children (being raised in Utah) were going to have tons of cavities.  She posted that she wished there was more fluoride in the water.

I wish I could show her the book "How to Cure Tooth Decay" by Rami Nigel and "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Dr. Weston A. Price.  The books show how the introduction of processed foods causes cavities. (Both are listed on my book favorite list on my amazon link under the recommendation page)

Wow!  So this same friend (who is extremely beautiful and healthy by the way) and I have differing opinions on vaccinations, on how we prepare meals for our families, we view treats differently and we obviously have differing opinions on the fluoridation of water.

So???

It took me 12 years to reverse my fears of....

Not fluoridating water...
Not pasteurizing and homogenizing milk...
Not giving my children vaccinations...
Eating organ meats...
Fermenting vegetables instead of canning them...
Fermenting drinks instead of pasteurizing them...

My son just asked me when we are going to the library and so I need to end this post, so I'll end quickly...

What are the things that you are motivated to believe or follow, based on FEAR? 

I've thought of making my theme for Celiac Shack... "Taking the Fear Out of.... well, Everything!"

I don't judge anyone for believing differently than I do.  It took reading 2 books and going to several lectures on raw milk before I was able to shed the fears that marketing had put in front of my eyes thinking it was unsafe.  It is safe as long as the cows are pasture fed, and the milk is extracted in a clean environment.

Knowledge IS Power!

Thank you Vivi for your post.  So true!  Knowledge IS Power!

I use to be so timid when talking to individuals about many of the things discussed in this blog, but as I gain more knowledge I feel like my words have more power behind them.  This blog is my health 'journal' per say.  It has gone from it's infancy stages of just showing you the books and foods I eat to being filled with more of my thoughts, ideas, and passion for true health.

Once an individual has that personal experience that helps them know an item discussed is true, when he or she speaks there will be a new found power behind their intentions, words and thoughts. The individual discovered a truth, practiced faith by applying the principle to their own life, they had their own experience, and the cycle continues as someone who has turned knowledge into wisdom (through  the application) shares that simple truth to others - with conviction.
I love the simple scripture that reads... "Be Wise. What more can I say?" (Jacob 6:12).

Nutritive Herbs to Store for Survival

After reading the article "Nutritive Herbs to Store for Survival" by Dr. Christopher (it's listed below) I'm definitely going shopping for more of these items. I have small packages of each item already in my home, but I will be purchasing more to have on hand since I now know they are essential food storage items.

Mormons or Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are taught to keep 2 years of food stored for emergencies or for difficult economical times. There is food storage that is highly processed and food storage that sustains life. I attended an Emergency Preparedness class once where one of the speakers told a story about a family that tested out their commercially bought food storage (the intent was to eat it for 1 year - and nothing else). After several months, one of the family members ended up in the hospital because of the food she was eating. The attempt was abandoned way before the goal was reached.

When I think of food storage I like to think of the Native Americans and how they stored food and I think of the people mentioned in Dr. Weston A. Price's book "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" that were still on their 'native' diets.

When thinking about food storage (naturally gluten-free food storage that is healthy for you), I think of pemmican (made from ground up dried meat and animal fat). I think of the herbs listed below. I think of bulk beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. I think of dried fruits and vegetables stored from the previous years garden.  I think of winter squashes, pumpkins etc. I think of fermented vegetables that are stored using the vegetable, sea salt and whey. I think of fermented drinks like beet kvass, etc. mentioned in Sally Fallon's book "Nourishing Traditions".

The following herbs are nutritive as well as medicinal and can be relief upon as concentrated food sources during times when fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds are not very abundant.

Alfalfa

(Arabic for "father of foods.") It contains protein, chlorophyll, vitamins A, B12, K, C, P, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. The tap root of alfalfa can extend as much as 40-70 feet below the surface of the ground, picking up many minerals from deep within the earth. This is something a plant with a shorter root could not do. Alfalfa can be used as a food or a food supplement. it contains essential hormones and enzymes necessary to keep the pituitary and adrenal glands functioning. There is a story we have told at many lectures and classes about the family that was incarcerated in a concentration camp during the Nazi occupation of Europe. This particular family found the strength to carry them through to the end of the war when they were released. The key was an alfalfa plant growing in the corner of the compound inside the fence. Each member of the family secretly permitted themselves a few leaves of the plant every day...allowing the alfalfa plant to replenish its leaves throughout the long months. The family obtained the necessary nutriments from the plant. These nutriments were not provided by the inferior and scarce prison food. The family maintained their health while others around them dropped dead from malnutrition.

Kelp or Dulse

(dried and powdered or granulated) These plants originate in the ocean. They also contain essential protein, vitamins (including B12) minerals, plus about 35 trace elements needed by the body in order to function well. The organic iodine supplied by kelp will rebuild and maintain the thyroid gland. Kelp also has a salty flavor because of the high potassium content, so it will flavor other foods as an excellent salt substitute without the ill effects of salt. We know of a couple who lived on a beach far from "civilization." When mushrooms and other wild vegetable food was scarce inland, they survived on fresh kelp washed ashore from the sea. Often they made kelp soup or kelp drink sweetened with honey
and using fresh water.

Slippery Elm Powder

This is high in protein and vegetable gelatin. One could thrive very well on slippery elm alone. We have attended several cases where small children were losing weight rapidly and becoming weaker from some wasting disease. Often they could not keep down any regular food. When they were placed on slippery elm gruel, a combination of slippery elm powder, water and honey made into a thin paste, they not only survived, but actually gained weight and regained their health. The taste is very palatable, too. It is filling, satisfying and nourishing.

Licorice Root Powder

The adrenal glands need a lift about every 5 hours to sustain the body's energy. If a meal or some other nourishment isn't available, licorice root will feed the adrenals. The armies of Alexander the Great carried licorice root with them on their long marching campaigns for energy, strength and stamina. A far cry from today's K-Rations, a calcium-leaching sugar chocolate candy bar issued to the poor G.I., by the military.

Licorice root will also retain hunger and thirst. A tablespoon of licorice root powder in a quart of water (shaken thoroughly) and taken a mouthful at a time over a period of a day will sustain the energy of a person who needs to stay alert on a long automobile drive, for example. Licorice root tea is a splendid pick-me-up. A group of women who worked on the night shift at a well known radio factory were getting caffeine jitters from ingesting quantities of the popular over-the-counter preparation for staying awake. They switched to licorice root tablets and found that their energy could be maintained throughout the night without the consequences of caffeine. Licorice root is an excellent choice for a storage herb, it was even found in Egyptian tombs! Do not procrastinate in obtaining the substance, however. We import tons of it from the middle east every year for commercial medications and the licorice candy industry. Only the Good Lord can say when a transportation strike will cripple the nation's economy and we will woefully bemoan our fate that this valuable herb has now become unobtainable. There is a species of licorice that is native to our country and it grows in high mountain areas. You can check local herb guides for pictures and localities. Another possibility is to try to obtain some starts for licorice at a nursery and cultivate it in your garden.

Comfrey Root Powder or Leaves

This herb is nutritive as well as medicinal. Comfrey root powder or comfrey leaves are excellent foods. Comfrey contains high quantities of protein as well as calcium. Comfrey root or comfrey leaf can be made into a tea or be included in green drinks (if you are fortunate enough to have electricity available for your blender and green leaves for your drink). Several folks we know have used the root powder as a thickening agent in their soups and stews: far more valuable than flour or cornstarch.

Marshmallow Root Powder

This is an invaluable herb which can be used as an herbal food as well as a soothing bath for healing the worst of open sores, especially gangrene. Marshmallow root powder can be reconstituted and used as a drink (a tea or thicker if desired) that can keep one from starvation. It is full of vegetable protein. It also promotes the flow of mother's milk
